“Tell them it's a gift from God,” the stranger said

The car salesman cried. Twenty-one years in the business and Mark Zach sat behind his desk Saturday morning and couldn't stop the tears.

Diane Schulz just stared. She had her checkbook out. She was here to pick up the cobalt blue Dodge Caravan with the high, wide doorways. The van with the ramp and room for a scooter and maybe, later, a wheelchair.

The $30,000 van for her husband, Neil. The van they needed to make it easier to deal with the devil that changed their lives.

I have something to tell you, the 62-year-old manager of Mobility Motoring Anderson Ford of Omaha said when he got his voice back.“This vehicle is paid for.” Then he repeated the words a stranger had spoken to him four hours earlier: “Tell them it's a gift from God.”

That's when Diane started crying, too....

Diane Duganitz ’78 Schulz didn’t know what to make of the car salesman’s words.

“When he said, ‘It’s paid for,’ I thought somebody else already bought it,” she said, referring to the $30,000 handicap-accessible van.

But Mark Zach of Mobility Motoring Anderson Ford couldn’t stop crying. Then Diane heard the words their anonymous benefactor told Zach.

It was a gift from God.

“I was just shocked,” Diane said. “God has already given us so many gifts. I was just overwhelmed and humbled.”

“The tears were certainly for joy,” Zach later said, “because for people to have that much compassion for other people is a beautiful thing.”
